Hafsa Essop, a lecturer in the Department of Radiography at the University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Health Sciences, has been awarded the coveted Cousins Award for her pioneering work in radiological protection. Bestowed by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), this accolade cements Hafsa's position at the forefront of international research and innovation.

As the stage was set for a grand celebration at the 7th International Symposium on the System of Radiological Protection in Tokyo, Japan, this November, Essop's anticipation mirrored the enchantment of her journey to this remarkable achievement.

"The award from the ICRP validates my work and enables me to make a meaningful contribution to radiological protection for pregnant radiographers, who have been a longstanding under-represented group in research”, expressed an elated Essop.

The Cousins Award isn't just a personal triumph; it's a testament to Essop's tireless efforts to address the needs of pregnant radiographers, a group historically overlooked in research. It's a symbol that puts not just South Africa but the entire African continent on the global map for contributions to the ICRP.

Essop, reflecting on the moments leading up to the award presentation, highlighted the remarkable experience of standing among fellow finalists from Australia, Germany, and Japan. The gala evening, a showcase of Japanese culture, turned surreal as Essop's name echoed in the venue. Delegates from Africa and South Africa gathered in celebration, turning the moment into a collective achievement for the continent, fostering a sense of pride and unity.

Essop's journey to Tokyo was without the expectation of receiving the award. "It therefore feels unbelievable,” she remarked. Many times, doubts about competing on an international level crossed her mind. However, upon receiving the award, she found validation in her work and immense pride in being part of the University of Pretoria. Essop expressed her heartfelt gratitude, saying, “I am incredibly proud to be part of the University of Pretoria under the guidance of my supervisors from the Department of Radiography, Dr Mable Kekana and Department of Informatics, Prof Hanlie Smuts, who played a significant role in my success”.

At the heart of Essop's achievements is the ground-breaking PregiDose mobile application, tailored for pregnant radiographers. Far more than a digital tool, PregiDose is a revolutionary concept addressing dose tracking, education, and psychosocial support.

“PregiDose is the first mobile app of its kind in the world for pregnant radiographers specifically”, explained Essop. "It showcases the potential of radiation protection and occupational health and safety to be facilitated through mobile applications”.

Essop's journey doesn't end with an award ceremony. Her involvement in the ICRP international task group exemplifies her commitment to advancing global understanding and measures for radiation protection.

“Beyond the award, my involvement in this group will delve deeper into understanding the effects of radiation in utero and measures to improve radiation protection for pregnant workers ”, Essop stated.

The global recognition shines a light on the commitment of the University of Pretoria to international excellence in research and innovation. Collaborative efforts between the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Faculty of EBIT have played a pivotal role in Essop's success.

Essop's achievements aren't just personal victories; they are beacons of inspiration for emerging scientists and professionals, especially for young women entering the field.

“I encourage emerging researchers to be mindful of their surroundings, such that they become problem solvers in a world rife with problems. Lastly, seize every opportunity that presents, as you never know which door can lead to great things”, encouraged Essop.

This call to dream big resonates with Essop's own journey, highlighting the University of Pretoria's expansive landscape for innovation, article writing, grant writing, intellectual property workshops, and robust research funding. Essop's words echo a commitment to fostering an environment where aspiring researchers can turn their visions into impactful realities.

Essop's journey is not just a story of individual triumph but a testament to the transformative impact of local research on the global stage. In her pioneering efforts, she exemplifies the University of Pretoria's commitment to producing research that transcends borders, leaving an indelible mark on the field of radiological protection.
