Professor Lekan Ayo-Yusuf, Chairperson of the School of Health Systems and Public Health in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Pretoria, has been elected as the Chairperson of the Academy of Science of South Africa's (ASSAf) Standing Committee on Health. This esteemed role will see him at the forefront of shaping health policies and addressing critical health challenges for the next three years.

Prof. Ayo-Yusuf has been chosen as the Chairperson of the Academy of Science of South Africa's (ASSAf) Standing Committee on Health for the upcoming three years. Established in 1996 during South Africa’s transition to democracy, ASSAf plays a pivotal role in harnessing the power of science for the benefit of society. In an exclusive interview, Prof. Ayo-Yusuf shared his vision and goals for this significant role.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the position, Prof. Ayo-Yusuf stated, "It is indeed an honour to be nominated by peers to lead this committee, and I'm excited about this opportunity to apply scientific evidence to shape government policy and drive societal development."

Motivated by his passion for giving back to the community, he accepted the Chairperson's role, seeing it as an opportunity to contribute to the work of the academy and make a difference in the field of health sciences.

With a clear vision for his tenure, Prof. Ayo-Yusuf aims to leverage the power of ASSAf to convene transdisciplinary groups of top scientists. Their mission is to apply science-based solutions to the complex challenges within the South African health system, all while working holistically to reduce poverty and improve overall well-being.

The ASSAf Standing Committee on Health plays a vital role in conducting consensus and assessment studies that align with the government's strategic goals. These evidence-based studies, guided by the committee, support public policy development and provide strategic guidance on health and health-related study activities.

Prof. Ayo-Yusuf recognises that there are pressing challenges in the field of health sciences. The committee's agenda, collectively determined by its members, is poised to address these challenges head-on. One such issue that will receive their attention is the 'social comorbidities of health,' aiming to provide a deeper understanding of how multiple social conditions intersect among individuals in South African society. Additionally, they will focus on 'climate change and health' and 'One Health,' all in an effort to enhance prevention and preparedness for future pandemics.

Collaboration is key, Prof. Ayo-Yusuf intends to hold strategic meetings with policy stakeholders, provide commentaries on policy issues, organise workshops, seminars, webinars, and publish policy booklets or journal publications.

To students, researchers, and professionals in the healthcare field who may look up to him as a leader, Prof. Ayo-Yusuf had a clear message: "It is important to stay focused on pursuing research excellence, and with time, your work will get recognised by peers. Being called to leadership is both an honour and a great sense of responsibility to the scientific community, as well as to society."

Prof. Ayo-Yusuf’s role officially began this month, and updates on the contributions of his committee can be found on the ASSAf website or through engagement with the ASSAf secretariat staff supporting the committee. South Africa's healthcare and academic communities can look forward to the positive impact he will make in this influential role.
