The Department of Physiology at the University of Pretoria proudly announced the remarkable participation of Professor Trevor Nyakudya at the recently concluded 5th International Congress of the African Society of Physiology and Physiopathology (SA2P). This esteemed event, jointly hosted by the African Association of Physiological Sciences, unfolded at Chaikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, Senegal, and brought together leading minds in the field of physiology.

Prof. Trevor Nyakudya, a member of the Department of Physiology, was also a member of the scientific committee and the local organising committee where he received well-deserved acclaim for his pivotal role in this prominent congress. His attendance was made possible through generous funding from both the Department of Physiology and the African Association of Physiological Sciences, symbolising a shared commitment to advancing research and education in the field of physiology.

During the congress, Prof. Nyakudya delivered two insightful oral presentations that underscored his expertise and dedication to advancing physiological knowledge. His first presentation, titled "Potential protective effect of neonatally administered zingerone against the development of alcohol-induced metabolic dysfunction in adulthood," looked into the possibility of utilising zingerone administration during the neonatal stage to mitigate the emergence of metabolic derrangements caused by alcohol consumption later on in adulthood.

In his second presentation, focused on Physiology education where Prof. Nyakudya shared findings from a qualitative study he conducted on medical students. This enlightening presentation explored undergraduate students' perceptions regarding the factors that facilitate or hinder the learning of neurophysiology at a South African metropolitan university. The study unveiled the importance of identifying factors that affect students' epistemic access to learning and provided insights for lecturers to develop effective teaching strategies to enhance students' learning of neurophysiology.

Prof. Nyakudya's active participation at the SA2P congress not only highlights his commitment to advancing scientific understanding of the developmental origins of health and disease, but also emphasises his dedication to sharing insights that can catalyse positive change within the academic community. His contributions at this esteemed event underscore his pivotal role in advancing physiological sciences, both in research and education.

Prof. Annie Joubert, Head of the Department of Physiology, extended heartfelt congratulations to Prof. Trevor Nyakudya, praising his exceptional contributions at the 5th International Congress of SA2P. The department eagerly anticipates the continued impact of his pioneering research and dedication to enhancing the field of physiological sciences.
