Spotlight on Women in Science: Celebrating Dr. Mankgopo M Kgatle as a Mover and Shaker

As part of our Women in Science campaign for Women's Month, we are thrilled to showcase the remarkable achievements of Dr. Mankgopo M Kgatle in the field of translational research in Nuclear Medicine. We recognise her as a "Mover and Shaker," Dr. Kgatle's contributions have not only left an indelible mark on her field but have also catalysed positive and innovative changes through her work.

At the forefront of groundbreaking research, Dr. Kgatle currently holds the position of Head of NuMeRI Basic and Translational Research and serves as the Principal Investigator for Medical Virology and Epigenetics. Her dedication is evident through her roles in Nuclear Medicine Research Infrastructure (NuMeRI) and the Department of Nuclear Medicine at the University of Pretoria.

Dr. Kgatle's areas of expertise encompass the exploration of epigenetic regulation of genes in virus-related carcinogenesis, prostate cancer, and coronaviruses. Leveraging epigenetics phenomena to enhance the efficacy of nuclear medicine therapy in viral infections, virus-related and prostate cancers is Dr. Kgatle’s current primary research interests and focus. Her multifaceted approach highlights her commitment to addressing critical medical challenges with ingenuity and determination.

Dr. Kgatle's academic journey reflects her unwavering pursuit of knowledge and excellence. She has held pivotal positions at renowned institutions, including a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the prestigious University of Oxford's Ludwig Cancer Research in the United Kingdom from September 2018 to December 2019. Prior to this, she contributed significantly during her Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Oxford's Department of Biochemistry from March 2017 to June 2018. Her academic pursuits also included a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Cape Town from November 2014 to December 2016. Notably, she also served as a Visiting Scholar at the Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi, for a four-month term in 2012.

Dr. Kgatle's work has garnered international recognition and influence. Her expertise is sought-after, as she has been invited to serve as a reviewer for esteemed international journals. Beyond academia, her contributions have been acknowledged by esteemed organizations including the National Research Foundation (NRF), the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC), and the Poliomyelitis Research Foundation (PRF).

Dr. Kgatle's commitment to education and mentorship is commendable. She actively supervises students pursuing PhD and MSc degrees within the University of Pretoria's Department of Nuclear Medicine. Her dedication also extends to guiding medical students during her tenure at the University of Cape Town.


Throughout her journey, Dr. Kgatle has earned prestigious fellowships and awards, underscoring her dedication to pushing the boundaries of knowledge and creating a positive impact. Noteworthy recognitions include the Thuthuka NRF Grant, the Prof. Bongani Mayosi Scholarship, the Schlumberger Faculty for the Future Foundation, and the Poliomyelitis Research Foundation Research Grant.
