The Faculty of Health Sciences welcomes Professor Salome Maswime

On the 06 June 2023, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Faculty of Health Sciences had the honour of hosting Professor Salome Maswime, a renowned global surgery expert and a passionate advocate for women's health rights and equity in surgical and maternal care. Professor Maswime delivered a compelling talk on the pivotal role of Global Surgery in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, as well as Surgery and Anaesthesia.

During the meeting, various discussions took place. Dr. Arthur Matlowa presented on Global Surgery, emphasising its indispensable role in achieving universal healthcare coverage. Dr. Sharon Makola, representing the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Pretoria, addressed the challenges within Global Surgery and highlighted the significant progress made in overcoming these obstacles.

Additionally, Professor Daniel Montwedi, Head of the Department of General Surgery at Kalafong Hospital, underscored the importance of leadership and teamwork in Global Surgery, particularly in providing safe, accessible, and high-quality surgical care to vulnerable populations. He also shared insights on the Comprehensive Regulation Programme for Lower Limb Amputation, which he leads.

Overall, the meeting fostered meaningful dialogue and knowledge sharing on critical aspects of Global Surgery within the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
