The University of Pretoria's first-year radiography students participated in an Amazing Race adventure to learn how to navigate the  Steve Biko Academic Hospital. 

Inspired by a well-known reality TV competition, the event involved completing several stages of challenges to finish the race. Hafsa Essop from the Department of Radiography said the Amazing Race competition was replicated in the hospital context for first-year Radiography students between 07 March and 14 March 2023. The event aimed to provide students with an innovative and educational approach to the radiography department orientation. 

At the start of the race, Hafsa supplied the necessary clues to enable students to follow the route to various radiography departments. The excited students were then met by an "Amazing Race Official," who ensured they were at the right place in each department. The event took meticulous coordination, carefully mapping out routes and activities. 

The fun-filled event saw the students completing radiography-related tasks, and upon finishing the task correctly, students received a clue to proceed to the next department. The activities were designed to allow students to engage with radiography activities within each department and retain and recall the experience with the particular department. 

As part of the competition, students created Whatsapp groups to document their experiences through pictures and videos. "The inclusion of a photo and video journal fostered team building, capturing group selfies and special moments shared by the group. This served as a great reflection of their overall experience", explained Hafsa. 

The race ended with sweet treats after many steps through the radiography departments at Steve Biko Academic Hospital. The event proved to be great fun and a learning opportunity for the students as they got an opportunity of being exposed to all areas of radiography, including imaging modalities that they will look forward to in their more senior years.
