UP researchers claim top spots in ranking of South Africa’s scientists

Posted on March 15, 2023

Researchers from the University of Pretoria have been ranked among the top scientists in South Africa in the annual World Online Ranking of Best Economics and Finance Scientists.

The report, published by Research.com on 1 March, ranks researchers at universities around the world, and further divides and ranks them by the country in which their research institution is based. Research.com is a leading research portal for scientists.

The rankings were based on data from various sources including OpenAlex and CrossRef and a researcher’s position in the ranking is based on their D-index (Discipline H-index), which only includes papers and citation values for an examined discipline.

Professor Sunil Maharaj, UP Vice-Principal for Research, Innovation and Postgraduate Education, congratulated the researchers and the faculties for their success in their research goals, and in boosting UP’s reputation as one of Africa’s best research-intensive universities. “As a university recognised for the quality and depth of the research we produce, this report reinforces our commitment to creating and advancing the optimal conditions and types of support needed to allow researchers to flourish in answering the questions they set out to tackle. I hope that this recognition spurs all our researchers on in achieving the ‘next big thing’ by identifying what the big game-changers are in the coming years that will impact our societies.”

A ranking based on a sum of D-index values of all leading scientists affiliated with a particular university put UP first in the country for Animal Science and Veterinary, Economics and Finance, Electronics and Electrical Engineering and Plant Science and Agronomy.

Among UP’s top-ranked scientists were:
