Faculty of Health Sciences Hosts Virtual Merit Awards Ceremony

The Faculty of Health Sciences hosted their first combined virtual Merit Awards ceremony to celebrate the achievements of the Undergraduate students attained in the 2019 academic year.  

The Faculty honoured Students from three of the Faculty’s four schools being the School of Medicine, School of Health Care Sciences and the School of Dentistry. Over fifty students received special prizes for their outstanding academic achievements, and the School Chairs acknowledged 240 students who had an average of 80% and higher.

The Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences Prof Tiaan de Jager reminded viewers that the COVID pandemic had affected the academic format but in retrospect fast-tracked much-needed change and transformation. “The fact that the average module pass rate in the Faculty increased from about 94% to 97% during these challenging times serves as proof to me that students will also be able to lead us into the “new normal” future and take Health Care in SA to the next level.” He shared during his welcome address. 

Prof Vanessa Steenkamp, Deputy Dean of Teaching and Learning shared that the Faculty and the University of Pretoria are proud to recognize the achievements of their students. “To the recipients and their loved ones, we extend our congratulations and join you in celebrating your achievements.  Many dream, some try and only a few achieve. You are an achiever today!”

The Deans thanked the Faculty Exco, School Chairs, Lecturers, sponsors and staff who make it possible for the university to deliver quality education that ensures that studentS #FLY@UP.
