Anti-Discrimination and Social Justice Week Closes of with Fitness, Self-Defense and Debate

On the final day of the Anti-Discrimination and Social Justice Week, students were reminded about October being Mental Health Awareness Month in South Africa. The UP Peer Support Group, Mentorship Programme and Student Clinic engaged students at Tswelopele.

Vanecia Marsh, Prinshof Gym Instructor, coordinated a workout session were participants broke a sweat. The session was followed by a self-defence class, which was coordinated by Martial Arts Expert Gary Lewis. Students received tips on what to do when they may be grabbed, assaulted or mugged.

Members from the Law, Economics and Health Sciences Faculties had a debate about “Xenophobic violence is a consequence of economic decay”. Judges included Brian Marais (Pulse Chairperson of the Culture Portfolio), David Kabwa (UP SRC President), Bettina Baidoo (Head and Coach of the South African debating team), Dr Emmanuel Matsebatlela (Head of the Academics and International Electives Office) and the Chair for External Campuses in the Tuks Debating Union who introduced herself as Kuku.
