Posted on September 30, 2019

The Anti-Discrimination and Social Justice week kicked off on 30 September 2019. Day one proved to be a platform for students to share poetry and to be activists.  Students and staff were treated to slam poetry. Nokwasi Dlamini performed a piece called “Period” which was written by Dominique Christina, Moe the Poet performed Kunzima Ukuba Indoda (It's hard being a Man) used poetry to highlight the challenges experienced by men and Nomthandazo performed Lament of a Woman.

Tuks UP and OUT hosted a panel discussion to unpack issues facing the LGBTQIA+ community. The panellist discussed the medico-legal and ethical implications of transgenderism in South Africa. One of the key points that came across was that "The transgender component in the LGBTQIA+ community is largely unrepresented and misunderstood." The discussion was followed by a Pride March across campus with students chanting, "L-G-B-T-Q-I-A, you can't make us go away!" as they walked across Prinshof Campus flying the pride flag high.
