Faculty of Health Sciences participates in Mandela Day 2019

The Faculty of Health Sciences has a proud of tradition of changing the lives of people in the community in various contexts. On 18 July 2019, staff members spent 67 minutes at Employment Solutions for People with Disabilities, located south-west of the faculty’s Prinshof Campus. They donated groceries and actively took part in projects such as packing conference and events bags, wrapping and labelling loose items, and cutting various materials to specification for sewing. “We are pleased to spend our 67 minutes at this centre, and we hope our contribution makes an immense difference in their lives,” said Marianna Kotzé, communication and marketing officer.

The world celebrated Nelson Mandela Day on 18 July 2019. Mandela Day is a global call to action that celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world, the ability to make an impact. Mandela gave 67 years of his life to the struggle for human rights and social justice.

The faculty encouraged staff and students to devote at least 67 minutes of their time to community service activities. Madiba once said: “It is in your hands to create a better world for all who live in it.”  The faculty has confidence that each staff member and student has the ability and responsibility to change the world for the better. “Faculty of Health Sciences visits, interactions and contributions always bring happy moments in our centre, and we hope our relationship will grow from strength to strength … thank you,” said Doreen Mokhutso, marketing officer of Employment Solutions for People with Disabilities.

The faculty’s theme is “Now is the time for change”, and if one of us heeded the call to simply make a change on Mandela Day, the faculty would be living Nelson Mandela’s legacy and helping to build the country of our dreams.  “It’s in your hands now,” said the late statesman.
