Jolene Helena wins research award at an international conference in Turkey

Miss Jolene Helena, a PhD student (upgraded from her Master of Science) in the Department of Physiology at Faculty of Health Sciences under the supervision of Dr AE Mercier, Prof AM Joubert and Dr P Mabeta, recently attended the International Conference on Radiation Biology and Free Radical in Istanbul, Turkey (27-28 June 2019). The conference provided an interdisciplinary scientific platform in which global challenges, solutions and innovations in the field of radiation biology were discussed. She gave an oral presentation on her thesis entitled “Targeting tumour survival and angiogenic migration after radiosensitization with an estrone analogue in an in vitro bone metastasis model” and was awarded with a certificate of excellence for her contribution, as well as the best oral presentation of the conference. Additionally, Ms Helena had the opportunity to network with fellow researchers from diverse research areas all around the world. The National Research Foundation and the UP PhD bursary are gratefully acknowledged for their financial support.
