Homegrown solutions for South Africa's hungry

Posted on August 01, 2016

South Africans are hungry. This is the harsh reality faced by poor communities that make up more than half of the population. Many people simply aren't eating a diet that is diverse or wholesome enough to get the nourishment they need.

Half of South Africa's population—some 27 million people—live below the global poverty line. Government grants are often the only means of survival for poor rural communities. These grants are however often insufficient to cover the basic cost of nutritious food.

To address this serious problem, the University of Pretoria's Institute for Food, Nutrition and Well-being (IFNuW) is actively working with poor communities to turn the tide on hunger through various uplifting and innovative projects.
