Investec Property Risk Internship

Posted on August 20, 2021

Goitseone Motloba, a real estate student at the Department of Construction Economics, was one of ten students selected for Investec’s Property Risk Internship 2021.  This internship attracted 249 applicants and Investec only invited 52 applicants for an interview.  After an extensive interview process, only 10 candidates were selected for the internship.  The virtual internship took place from 22 July to 6 August.

Interns had to engage in meetings with different professionals from Investec’s property risk team.  The interns were divided into teams and each team was assigned with a specific project.  Goitseone’s team had to work on a shopping centre development.  They had to go through over 25 documents, including title deeds, SG diagrams, site plans, zoning certificates, etc. and had to analyse the development from the initial planning stage up to completion.  They then had to give an opinion on whether the bank should finance the deal.  The interns only had 8 days to complete and present their projects to Investec.  Goitseone said that the goal of the project was for interns to learn how to identify risk in a development from the bank’s perspective, and to cultivate skills as professionals in the property industry.

During the internship, Goitsone was mentored by one of Investec’s property economists, who provided him with the necessary guidance and support.  Goitse said that the most valuable thing he learnt was to always be willing to learn, and learn how to connect and work with people.

Goitseone was an ambassador for our Department and we are proud of him. He summarised his experience in these words “I’m impressed with Investec; the knowledge I’ve gained is invaluable, and the people I’ve worked with are no less than impeccable. I could summarise my experience with four words: Out of the Ordinary.”
