Two Scientists from ICRISAT, India visit the Department of Consumer and Food Sciences

Dr Saikat Datta Mazumdar, Chief Operating Officer of the NutriPlus Knowledge Program (NPK) and Dr Gopalakrishnan Subramaniam, Principal Scientist (Microbiology), both from the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) in Hyderabad, India, visited the department from 27 February to 6 March 2019. Dr Datta Mazumdar and Dr Subramaniam are collaborators with Prof Gyebi Duodu on a DST/NRF South Africa-India joint research project on traditional foods of South Africa and India. In what was a very fruitful visit, the two scientists conducted laboratory research work relating to aspects of food microbiology, food rheology and bioactive components of food during their visit. The laboratory work involved participation from other members of the academic staff and post-graduate students. Dr Datta Mazumdar and Dr Subramaniam also engaged with other academic staff members regarding potential areas of future research collaboration.
