Posted on December 05, 2016

The Department of Marketing Management hosted Prof Robin Coulter from the University of Connecticut from 5 to13 November 2016. Prof Coulter’s research focuses on consumer behaviour issues. She is the President of the Academic Council for the American Marketing Association, and is an active member of the Association for Consumer Research. Prof Coulter has also consulted for companies such as Proctor and Gamble, McNeil Consumer Products and Coca-Cola.

Prof Coulter’s visit was made possible through the Stephan and Pierre Viljoen Award that was awarded to Ms Danita Potgieter, a staff member in the Department of Marketing Management. As part of the award, Ms Potgieter invited Prof Coulter to visit the Department.

Prof Coulter presented a two-day workshop to the staff of the Department of Marketing Management, which focused on experimental design, which is one of Prof Coulter’s areas of expertise. Several individual consultation sessions were scheduled between staff members and Prof Coulter and the staff gained valuable insight and skills to equip them in this research method. Whilst visiting, Prof Coulter also presented a Brown Bag lecture to the staff of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences. Staff who attended showed great interest and was enlightened by her presentation.

A number of research collaborations have been established and will continue to develop through the relationship built with Prof Coulter. Ms Danita Potgieter spent a weekend at Dinokeng Game Reserve with Prof Coulter for a complete African experience. During her stay in Pretoria, she also visited Maropeng Cradle of Humankind, the Sterkfontein Caves, the Voortrekker Monument, Union Buildings and Hartbeespoort Dam.
