The Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology (EBIT) at the University of Pretoria presents a freestanding compulsory module, Joint Community-based Project, JCP 202, for all undergraduates. The eight-credit module (80 hours) is offered on an open-ended and project-orientated basis. Students first have compulsory orientation sessions, and only after the approval of their project may students start with their fieldwork of at least 40 hours. After the students have done their fieldwork, they report on their experiences and lessons learned via a presentation, a report and a YouTube video.
The main objective of this module is the execution of a community service-related project aimed at achieving a beneficial impact on a chosen section of society, preferably but not exclusively by engagement with a section of society which is different from the student's own social background. This module also aims to develop an awareness of personal, social and cultural values as well as multidisciplinary and life skills, such as communication, interpersonal and leadership skills.
Since the start of the compulsory for all students in the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology (EBIT), the Department of Information Science has been involved in many projects.
One of the focus areas for the Department of Information Science, was digital citizenship during 2021
