10 Steps to prepare for your first year in House Mags

Welcome to the beginning of the most exciting, PINK adventure of your life. We are very excited to take this journey with you and to share in the adventures that lie ahead. To be a Spikkel is truly an honour and we hope you are excited to become a part of the PINK PALACE.

We have an Information Day on 22 October 2023, for all our new first-year students of 2023. Please send us an email ([email protected]) if you have been placed in House Mags for 2023, but have not yet received an invitation for the Information Day.

Below are 10 steps to follow to prepare for your stay in House Mags

Step 1: Download and read your Spikkel book
(2023 book to be released soon - watch this space!)
This is a very special book for first year students. Your Spikkel book has all the information you will need before moving into House Mags. We recommend that you study the book from cover to cover, as it will help you to prepare for next year. Pay special attention to the checklist at the end of the book to ensure you have all the things you need before you move into House Mags. Happy reading!

Step 2: Complete your online Spikkel survey (survey will open soon - watch this space)
Please click on the Spikkel questionnaire link and complete the online questionnaire as soon as possible, but not later than 27 January 2023. This questionnaire allows us to get to know you better. Please answer all the questions as honestly as possible since we also use the answers to match room mates. Talking about room mates, please note that House Mags has very few single rooms available for first year students, so you will most likely be assigned to a double room.

Step 3: Download and complete your Clothing order form
The clothing form gives you the opportunity to indicate which compulsory clothing you would like to purchase for next year. Please bring the completed form with when you move into the residence in 2023. Besides ordering your residence clothing, you also need to bring black long pants from home. Mags ladies wear their residence clothing on a weekly basis.

Step 4: Download, complete and submit your Medical form
By completing the medical form, you will allow us to assist you should a medical emergency arise during your stay in House Mags. Please complete and e-mail the medical form to: [email protected], or bring the completed medical form when you move into the residence in 2023.

Step 5: Take (and e-mail) a head-and-shoulder colour picture of yourself

Please e-mail a colour head-and-shoulders picture of yourself to the First Year Guardian, Ruvé Blaauw at [email protected] as soon as possible, but not later than 27 January 2023. Ideally this should be a recent picture (you can take a selfie) of you in everyday life, and not you dressed up at a special event such as a matric farewell or wedding.

Step 6: Download the 2023 UP calendar
Feel free to download the University of Pretoria calendar to assist you in planning for the upcoming year.

Step 7: Download the parent/s letter and give it to your parents
Please download the parents letter and give it to your parents to read. This will provide them with important information about the day you have to move into House Mags.

Step 8: Join the House Mags Facebook and Instagram pages

Facebook: House Mags

Instagram: @housemags

Step 9: Checklist
Please check that you have all the items on the checklist (which you will find at the back of the Spikkel book - refer to step 1 for the spikkel book). This checklist will help you get everything together before you move into House Mags.

Step 10: Make contact with the first year guardian
If you have not had any e-mail communication with the First Year Guardian, Ruvé Blaauw, please send her an e-mail and introduce yourself.

Contact Details: Ruvé Blaauw
Cell: +27 (81) 046 5550
E-mail: [email protected]

We can’t wait to meet our new Spikkels (Spikkels is our special name for our 1st year students)! Prepare for the best time of your life! Good luck with your exam and happy packing!
