The first tradition that you will encounter is your Spikkelbook.

This is a very important book and your guide to Mags. The  Spikkel book contains basic information to prepare you for your first year in Mags. It contains information on topics such as:

  • The House Committee of Mags
  • House parents of Mags
  • Room information (size of bed and windows)
  • The programme for 18 January 2014 (Move-in day)
  • How to adapt to residence life
  • What you should bring to res
  • What you can expect from Welcome Week
  • What happens during your first four weeks in res
  • And much, much more...

The Spikkel book is mailed to our new first year students during November. If you have been admitted into Mags, and have not  received your Spikkel book via e-mail by the middle of December, please contact you First Year Guardian, Michele Uys at 082 346 7745.

WELCOME DAY (MOVING IN)

Welcome Day is when all the new Spikkels arrive with fridges and all to move into the residence and  a lot of parents walk away with eyes full of tears after saying goodbye to their most precious belonging. This day, as a Spikkel, you are very excited, but also nervous at the same time! But do not fear, as Welcome Day is followed by Welcome Week that will help you to make new friends and get you acquinted with all the Mags activities.

WELCOME WEEK

This is a long week and where sleep is not really part of the programme but TONS of fun is!!!!  A great week to familiarise you with your new environment and to show you how all the things in Mags and on campus work.

‘SLEEP’ (Afrikaans for mass dating a men’s residence)

This is morning socials where the mens and womans residences meet and walk to campus together. The best way to meet all the guys! The Spikkels impress the first year men’s students with songs  and then everyone ‘sleep’ (proceed) to campus.

CAMPUS LUNCH

During Welcome Week the House Committee members will take lunch boxes for all the Spikkels while they are on campus during the day. What better way to get to know the guys of the other residences than eating together on the Aula's grass!

 1nSync

This is a sing and dance concert that all the first year of the different residences take part in. The most exhausting activity, but definitly one of the the most fun things you will ever do!!! Even if there is not that much time to practice, with all the great ladies we’ve got…nothing is imposible! Read more about Ienkmelodienk on the Residence Life web page.

RAG WEEK

RAG week is full of fun, late nights,’ blommetjies vou’ and the most important of all it is for charity!!! ?During this week we get togther with our Rag partners and together we will build our float. Read more about RAG on the Residence Life web page.

SONGS

There are two very important songs you have to learn. The first is Mags’s house song which is sung at formal events – see the words on the Traditions web page. The second is the Mags song which is sung at informal and social events – see the words on the Traditions web page. The third is the “huppel” song which is sung every time you “huppel” across the walk way (runway) known as the ‘Blad’. This song is always sung with lots of energy and attitude. Below are the words to the “huppel” song (you can select your version whether it be English, Afrikaans or Sepedi):

(English version)
And we will... huppel huppel huppel huppel because we feel happy,

huppel huppel huppel huppel 'cause we are spikkeltjies,

huppel huppel huppel huppel because we feel happy,

huppel huppel huppel huppel 'cause we are spikkeltjies...

(REPEAT AS MUCH AS YOU CAN)

(Afrikaans version)

En ons gaan... huppel huppel huppel huppel omdat ons vrolik voel,

huppel huppel huppel huppel want ons is spikkeltjies,

huppel huppel huppel huppel omdat ons vrolik voel,

huppel huppel huppel huppel want ons is spikkeltjies...

(Sepedi version)

Bja-le re… huppel, huppel, huppel, huppel, a re thabileng,

huppel, huppel, huppel, huppel, re be le Spikkeltjies,

huppel, huppel, huppel, huppel, a re thabileng,

huppel, huppel, huppel, huppel, re be le Spikkeltjies...

There are much more instore for you but that you will have to experience yourself
