Mining Engineering students promote safety at the Kloppersbos Explosion Research Facility

Posted on June 14, 2023

In an effort to raise awareness of the dangers of coal dust explosions and promote safe working conditions in industries prone to fires and explosions, a group of final-year students from the Department of Mining Engineering in the University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology recently visited the Kloppersbos Explosion Research Facility just outside Pretoria.

This facility, managed by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), serves as a vital resource for testing, training, and research and development related to fires and explosions.

The students embarked on this visit with the aim of understanding the intricacies of coal dust explosions, and gaining valuable insight into the preventative measures that can be implemented to mitigate these risks. The Kloppersbos Explosion Research Facility offered them a unique opportunity to witness first-hand the devastating consequences that explosions can have on industrial environments.

The students were exposed to a full-scale surface testing facility designed specifically to evaluate underground explosion suppression systems. They witnessed controlled explosions and observed the effectiveness of various explosion suppression techniques. This hands-on experience enabled them to comprehend the importance of implementing adequate safety measures to prevent catastrophic events.

In addition to studying explosion suppression systems, the students also learned about the flammability of conveyor belts and explored dust suppression systems for continuous mining. These investigations are crucial in industries where coal dust is present, as they aid in identifying potential hazards and developing effective methods to minimise the risk of fires and explosions.

By visiting the Kloppersbos Explosion Research Facility, the students not only gained valuable knowledge, but also developed a deep appreciation for the significance of safety protocols in industries prone to fires and explosions. They also recognised the importance of continuous research and development to enhance safety standards and ensure the well-being of workers in such environments.

Furthermore, the students recognised the role they can play in creating awareness and promoting safe practices within their respective industries. Armed with the knowledge acquired at the facility, they pledged to advocate for strict adherence to safety guidelines and champion the implementation of preventive measures to minimise the occurrence of fires and explosions.

Visiting the Kloppersbos Explosion Research Facility was an eye-opening experience for the students. It not only exposed them to the devastating consequences of fires and explosions, but empowered them with knowledge and insight to create a safer working environment. With their newfound understanding, these students are poised to make a significant impact on the industry they will soon enter, championing safety and advocating for the wellbeing of workers in the face of potential hazards.

The Department of Mining Engineering should be commended for fostering an environment that encourages students to actively engage with real-world safety concerns. By providing them with opportunities to visit a facility such as the Kloppersbos Explosion Research Facility, the Department ensures that its graduates are well prepared to tackle industry challenges and make in positive contribution to the mining industry.
