The covid-19 pandemic has accelerated the shift to online education and the educational approach at the Department of Construction Economics will continue to be a hybrid between online and face-to-face combined with the innovative use of technology. As a Department we strive to remain at the forefront when educating the young construction professionals of the future.
Over the past two years, our students have become accustomed to online tests and exams and we want to continue to build on that mode of assessment. That is why we decided to conduct the 2022 mid-year examination as “online-in-person”. The Department of Construction Economics, which is one of only a few departments at UP following this approach, had to jump at the opportunity to make this happen for our students.
In a short space of time, the Department managed to obtain funding to equip our lecture halls with sufficient plug points and power. During the mid-year exam, each student had to bring their own laptop to campus and write the online exam under invigilation while physically sitting in a lecture hall. An initiative like this will bring about new challenges, but nothing that our Department could not overcome. Overall, the “online-in-person” examination worked well and this is something our Department will consider for future assessments.
