Well-attended International Iron Ore Sintering Symposium organised by the Department of Material Science and Metallurgical Engineering

Posted on March 16, 2018

A two-day seminar was co-hosted by the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering of the University of Pretoria and the SAIMM Pretoria Branch and the on the 7th and 8th March. The title of the seminar was “Iron Ore: Mineralogy, Fines Processing, Pelletizing and Sintering”. The central SAIMM office assisted with promotion of the event, and it was very well attended (59 attendees) by metallurgical engineers from all over South Africa.

The seminar was opened by the HoD Prof Roelf Mostert in his capacity as the Chairperson of the SAIMM Pretoria branch, whereafter the Dean of the Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology Faculty, Prof Sunil Maharaj, presented the welcoming address. Over the two days, three leading international scholars in the field (Dr Liming Lu from Australia, Dr Joseph Poveromo from the USA and Prof Leal Laurindo from Brazil) as well as four local researchers shared their knowledge and experience in this important field. With the demand for and price of high quality iron ore rising, the seminar was regarded as “timely” and “valuable” by the attendees.
