In memorium: Dr Johan van Zyl

Posted on August 04, 2021

It is with great sadness that the University of Pretoria (UP) learnt of the passing, on 31 July 2021, of Dr Johan van Zyl (63), Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) chairman and member of the Advisory Board of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) at UP.

One of 10 highly respected and valued members of the private and public sector on the Board, Dr Van Zyl played a meaningful role in shaping the Faculty’s broader corporate governance initiatives, advising on strategic issues and providing feedback on educational, research and community service aspects of its programmes.

“For the past 15 years, Johan’s contribution and input as a member of our Advisory Board were invaluable. While his insightful comments and sound advice will be sorely missed, his legacy will continue to be a source of inspiration for many,” says Prof Elsabé Loots, former EMS Dean and chairperson of the EMS Advisory Board.

She adds: “Johan was such a warm person. He could zoom into a challenge and suggest a novel solution. Johan was always calm and collected and never gave the impression that he is managing a tight schedule. He knew exactly what attributes were required from young entrants into the business world and never hesitated to share them. He was a family man and always proud of his roots and family. Our sincere condolences go to his wife, Santie, his children and to the family.”

On LinkedIn, Andrew Kirby South Africa Toyota CEO and President, also has only the highest regard for the late Dr Van Zyl: “The ‘Doc’ will be remembered for his visionary leadership, passion for education, respect for people and their cultures, his love for story telling and his uncanny humour.”

Following six years as Toyota Motors Europe President, Dr Van Zyl earlier this year returned to South Africa to serve as executive chairperson of TSAM. While in Europe, he also served as TSAM chairperson.

Dr Van Zyl was all set to embark on his new venture as TSAM chairperson, which, apart from focusing on the long-term aspects of the business in South Africa, future manufacturing technology and moving from being a vehicle manufacturer to a mobility provider, also entailed a particular passion of his, namely the development of people. “We need to make sure we have the right succession and future leadership in place.”

Sadly, this time round, fate stepped in and he could not complete his mission.

Hamba kahle, Dr Johan Van Zyl!
