Posted on February 14, 2020

Eduard Toerien, a lecturer in the Department of Financial Management, recently attended the 32nd Australasian Finance and Banking Conference (AFBC), hosted by the University of New South Wales (UNSW) at the Shangri-La hotel in Sydney, Australia. He presented a paper titled ‘On the determinants of derivatives disclosures – an emerging market perspective’.

“The paper I presented forms part of the broader study on derivatives from my PhD studies. I attended a PhD forum, which was an invaluable opportunity to not only gain insight into my own studies, but also to see the standard of PhD studies by other international students and to see and discuss the topics they are working on,” he says.

Toerien further explains that the purpose of attending the event was to present his research at an international conference to gain important insight from different experts in the field of finance and economics, to gain exposure to new ideas of what is happening in research at the moment in the finance and economic fields, and to network with some of the world’s most respected researchers.

The conference was an international event, with many participants from across the world. Presenters came mostly from top universities in the United States, Australia and Asia. South Africa was represented by Toerien, as well as two presenters from Unisa. Notable speakers at the conference included Robert Engle, recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2003 for his research on the concept of autoregressive conditional heteroskedacity, Michael S Weisbach, the Ralph W Kurtz Chair in Finance and former editor of The Review of Financial Studies, and Jarrad Harford, managing editor of the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis and associate editor for the Journal of Financial Economics and the Journal of Corporate Finance.
