Posted on August 13, 2018

Prof Stella Nkomo, former deputy dean for Research and Postgraduate Studies in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, has earned the prestigious 2018 Award for Distinguished Service from the Academy of Management (AOM). The award was conferred on her at the organisation's annual meeting in Chicago recently.

This lifetime career achievement award recognises long-term, significant contributions in one or more of the following areas: enhancing a field of study; founding or creatively editing a scholarly journal; and unusually effective service to a major professional institution.

According to the Chair of the AOM’s Career Achievement Awards committee this year, Prof Trish Reay, the committee noted Prof Nkomo’s ongoing efforts to improve the quality of university education and management research in Africa; how she has been fully engaged in preparing for Academy conferences in Africa; and how she has taken an instrumental role in the development of the Africa Journal of Management. “The broad impact of her ongoing contributions in terms of service has brought lasting and now multiplying benefits to the field!” said Prof Reay.

Some of Prof Nkomo's nominators elaborated on her exceptional contributions:

  • “She [Stella] has been a stellar member of the Academy and she has radically transformed management research in Africa.”
  • “She is the epitome of the African concept of ubuntu, which roughly translated means ‘I am what I am because of who we all are’, because she helps everyone around her to contribute positively to the development of others in a non- judgemental way.”
  • “She has been and remains an inspiration for future leadership of the Gender and Diversity in Organizations (GDO) Division of AOM. She wanted GDO to be more inclusive, to be more international, to be more critical, and her guidance has been key to the strength of this division.”
Prof Nkomo’s latest achievement was acknowledged by UP's Dean of  the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, Prof Elsabé Loots, who congratulated her.
