Top Marketing students take centre stage

Posted on May 11, 2017

Bright and early on the morning of 25 April 2017, the Department of Marketing Management welcomed its top achievers and their families/partners to the annual Marketing Management prize-giving function. The High Performance Centre at the University of Pretoria served as a suitable venue for the celebration, as all of the students were the top performers of their respective year groups.

Whilst having breakfast, the morning programme commenced with some inspiring words from Prof Yolanda Jordaan, Head of the Department of Marketing Management, congratulating the top achievers and thanking our esteemed industry partners, Porsche South Africa, Consulta Research and Mr Viljoen, for their financial contributions.

Below are the top marketing students with the UP-representatives and prize sponsors.

Back row (left to right): Dr Michelle van der Merwe, Ms Sarah Cox, Prof Yolanda Jordaan (Head: Department of Marketing), Prof Adré Schreuder (CEO: Consulta Research), Prof Elsabé Loots (Dean: Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences), and Ms Cassandra Mayer.

Front row (left to right): Ms Sotira Petrou, Ms Tayla Clipstone, Ms Dibueng Bosman, and Ms Anastasia Carnelley-Bruyns.

Each of the prize recipients were introduced by staff members, who provided insight into the specific recipient’s recipe for success. Ms Dibueng Bosman, the recipient of the Porsche South Africa prize for best academic performance on first-year level, said she is motivated by her drive to make her mother proud. “Continue to strive to achieve the goals you have set for yourself”, was the advice provided by Ms Anastasia Carnelley-Bruyns, the recipient of the Porsche South Africa prize for best academic performance on second-year level. Ms Cassandra Mayer, the Porsche South Africa prize winner for best academic performance on third-year level, urged students to never be afraid to ask for help. The Porsche South Africa prize for best academic performance for the BCom Honours in Marketing Management was shared by Ms Tayla Clipstone and Ms Sarah Cox. Both ladies describe themselves as passionate and resilient. Lastly, Ms Sotira Petrou, the Porsche South Africa prize winner for best academic performance for the MCom in Marketing Management, encouraged students to see the challenges that they encounter as opportunities to grow. In total, Porsche South Africa sponsored prizes to the value of R15 000.

The Stephan and Pierre Viljoen Award, to the value of R45 000, was awarded to Dr Michelle van der Merwe. The award money will be used to invite an international research expert to visit the Department of Marketing Management and present workshops to staff and students. Consulta Research sponsored the prize for the best BCom Honours in Marketing Management research project to the value of R6 000, which was awarded to Ms Tayla Clipstone, Ms Sarah Cox and Ms Brigitte Twaite. Prize-winner Brigitte Twaite’s award was accepted by her mother, Waltraud Twaite on her behalf, as Brigitte is currently doing au pair work in Germany. Brigitte shared with us that, one day, she wishes to be rich enough to buy her own summer holiday island off the coast of a tropical island.

After the prize-giving function was concluded, the Economic and Management Sciences graduation ceremony commenced. The Department of Marketing Management was proud to confer 156 Marketing Management degrees, of which 97 students obtained their BCom Marketing Management degree, 45 their BCom Honours in Marketing Management degree (pictured below), 13 their MCom in Marketing Management degree and 1 student a PhD in Marketing Management. Of the 156 degrees conferred, 16 students achieved distinctions for their respective degrees.

The Department of Marketing Management is very proud of each and every student that received a degree and/or achievement award, and thanks them for all their hard work and dedication!
