Closing the gap between theory and practice

Posted on June 23, 2015

The Supply Chain Management section in the Department of Business Management embarked on various industry-alliance projects in recent years. The purpose of this initiative is to close the gap between theory and practice and to produce highly innovative, creative and job-ready supply chain management graduates for the South African and global labour market.

To this end the Department of Business Management joined forces with Hellmann Worldwide Logistics during the first semester of 2015. MPhil Supply Chain Management students took part in a value leak assessment project for Hellmann Worldwide Logistics South Africa as part of the coursework module OBS 818 under supervision of Dr Marcia Mkansi.

Student teams were allocated to various logistics activities, such as warehousing, transport, inventory, packaging and unitisation, information technology and communication. Each group had to develop a value leak framework for Hellmann Worldwide Logistics South Africa with practical tools and solutions.

The teams presented their projects to a panel of judges, which included Hellmann’s CEO for Africa Mr Heinrich Stassen, Sales Director for Sub-Saharan Africa Mr Michael Barber, Mr Wesley Niemann, Programme Manager for Supply Chain Management in the Department of Business Management, and Dr Marcia Mkansi, a senior lecturer in Supply Chain Management.

Hellmann Worldwide Logistics awarded the top team a shared prize of R20 000 towards their tuition fees. The winning team consisted of four members, namely Yvonne Vermeulen, Steveni van Niekerk, Trust Cele and Adele van Loggerenberg.
