Posted on February 16, 2015

Two MCom students from the Department of Human Resource Management will visit the Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany from 22 to 29 March 2015. Helena du Preez and Leani van Zyl are both busy with their mini dissertations regarding different aspects of a larger research project on transnational labour relations in the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

Helena du Preez is doing research on a "Comparative analysis between the Social Charter of the EU and the Charter on Fundamental Social Rights of the SADC", while Leani van Zyl is researching "International Framework Agreements: A form of Transnational Labour Relations".  Dr Paul Smit is the leader of this research project under the mentorship of Prof Manfred Weiss of the Goethe University. During their visit to Prof Weiss the students will have individual meetings and discussions with him, as well as a joint group discussion and workshop including Dr Smit. The students will also do data collection while in Germany.

Meanwhile, Dr Smit will travel to the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam in the Netherlands on 26 February 2015, where he will do research for a three-month period until 30 May 2015 together with Prof Klara Boonstra on transnational collective bargaining as part of the UP Staff Exchange Bursary programme.
