Research Vision

Our vision is to be an internationally recognised and locally relevant centre of research excellence in the economic, management and financial sciences. We strive to be at the cutting edge of economic, financial and management education and research with an African focus.

Research Areas

The Faculty of Economic and Management (EMS) aims to be a research-intensive Faculty undertaking research that contributes to knowledge production and solves some of societies complex problems. Through a multitude of research initiatives and collaborations, the Faculty aims to expand its research and intellectual presence across its four disciplines.

The Faculty is committed to enhancing its research productivity to increase research output, research impact and improve its research visibility. Aligned to its vision to be at the cutting edge of economic, financial, and management education, research, and community engagement within the national, African, and global context, the Faculty is continuously strengthening its research profile through strategic international partnerships and knowledge-capacity building. The Faculty has a number of leading extraordinary professors with joint affiliations at prominent international institutions to supervise doctoral students, mentor emerging researchers, and co-publish with other leading researchers in the Faculty.

The Faculty's primary focus is on conducting research that creates meaningful societal impact and adds value across all its research focus areas.

Research Excellence in Economic, Financial and Management Sciences

EMS is one of the largest faculties at UP. The Faculty aims to continuously strengthen its position as a leader in the fields of economic, financial and management sciences through its academic and research excellence.

In April 2023, the EMS became the first Faculty of its kind in Africa to be accredited by The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International, a prestigious accreditation body for business education across the globe. This accreditation affirms the Faculty’s commitment to the highest standard of commerce education and global excellence. The Faculty is now among an elite group of 6% of institutions worldwide that are AACSB-accredited. Postgraduate students in the Faculty will enjoy a host of benefits that come with being affiliated with an AACSB-accredited institution giving them a competitive advantage in the market.

The quality of teaching and research in the Faculty is evident in several international rankings such as the QS World University Ranking by Subject Rankings, Times Higher Education World University Rankings and Shangai Rankings, which rank the Faculty top in South Africa in several of its disciplines.

EMS remains committed to its mission of advancing relevant knowledge, developing employable, innovative and diverse graduates who will co-create value for society and be thought leaders in South Africa and globally.
