Prof Taylor has been supervisor and co-supervisor of more than 100 MSc and PhD graduates and postdoctoral fellows from across sub-Saharan Africa, many of whom now hold senior positions in academia, government and industry in Africa and across the world. He is the author or co-author of more than 200 research papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals, some 60 book chapters and many technical reports to industry. Prof Taylor is currently co-editing the latest edition of the standard Cereals & Grains Association (formerly American Association of Cereal Chemists) handbook on sorghum and millets, and in 2023 he co-edited the “ICC Handbook of 21st Century Cereal Science and Technology”, both books being published by Elsevier.
He is recipient of numerous awards, including Member of the Academy of Science of South Africa, the Excellence in Teaching Award of the Cereals & Grains Association (C&GA) , Fellow of the C&GA, Fellow of the International Academy of Food Science and Technology, Fellow of the Academy of the International Association for Cereal Science and Technology (ICC), and is a recipient of the University of Pretoria’s Chancellor’s Award for Research. Most recently Prof Taylor was awarded the C&GA’s Thomas Burr Osborne Medal and the ICC’s Clyde Bailey Medal, in recognition of his lifetime achievements in cereal science and technology.
Currently, Prof Taylor’s work is focused on introducing fortified wholegrain foods into the diets of nutritionally at-risk people in sub-Saharan Africa to improve their health. In this regard, he serves as senior food science advisor to the Fortified Whole Grain Alliance, based in Kenya.
