Dr. Sonnenberg is currently a senior lecturer in the Department of Consumer and Food Science. She obtained both her master’s and Ph.D. in Consumer Science, focusing on the complexities of environmentally and socially responsible consumer behaviour in the local emerging market context. She lectures on consumer behaviour in the clothing and textile domain, including courses that are focused on sustainability and quality assurance aspects. Her research focuses on sustainable consumption in emerging markets, with a particular interest in the apparel and interior merchandise sector for which she has obtained funding from sources such as the National Research Foundation and the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program. She has supervised several master’s and Ph.D. studies, not only at the University of Pretoria but also at other prominent tertiary institutions. Dr. Sonnenberg has published in several peer-reviewed scientific journals and delivered oral presentations at various local and international conferences, including the World Marketing Congress of the Academy of Marketing Sciences, annual conferences of the World Sustainability Forum, and the International Textile and Apparel Association. She reviews for several national and international journals that are focused on sustainability, consumer behaviour, and apparel and has also served on various prominent Social Sciences review panels.
