Posted on June 23, 2016

On Thursday,  9 June 2016, the Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology at the University of Pretoria (UP) received two KUDUwave™ mobile audiometers from biomedical technology company, eMoyo.

At the handover ceremony on the Hatfield Campus, the inventor of the KUDUwave™ and managing director of eMoyo (Pty) Ltd, the sole manufacturer of the KUDUwave™, Dr Dirk Koekemoer said that technology and innovation are evolving at a rapid rate, and that the company's intention with this donation was to create an opportunity for learners to increase their knowledge and experience of some of the new technologies available in the audiology environment.

In South Africa, over three million people are hearing impaired, and with limited medical practitioners available in the country, there is an urgent need for alternative, efficient hearing-testing technology and methodology. The KUDUwave™ was designed to help fill this need. With its mobile, lightweight and user-friendly design, it enables patients to undergo accurate and comprehensive hearing tests at an affordable price, even if they live in rural areas. The KUDUwave is also ideal for Occupational Health testing, wellness screening and diagnostic audiology. The KUDUwave™ audiometer carries the European CE quality mark and is also registered for distribution in the USA and Australia.

Dr Koekemoer said that eMoyo and the University of Pretoria have enjoyed a great working relationship on research projects that made use of the KUDUwave™, and that he hoped this relationship would go from strength to strength with new products developed in the future.

Accepting the two KUDUwave™ devices on behalf of the University, Professor Bart Vinck, Head of the Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, said that the KUDUwave™ equipment's mobility has allowed students at the Department to provide diagnostic hearing tests to community members across Tshwane.
