The University of Pretoria’s Centre for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (CAAC) will be hosting two workshops presented by Prof Rajinder Koul of Texas Tech University.

The first workshop is titled ‘Acquired neurogenic communication disorders: clinical practice and science’ and the second is titled ‘Advances in AAC technology for acquired neurogenic communication disorders’.
 
Professor Rajinder Koul holds a PhD in Speech-Language Pathology with an emphasis on augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) from Purdue University. He is currently a Professor and Chair in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at Texas Tech University’s Health Sciences Center, and Associate Dean for Research for the School of Allied Health Sciences. His work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals and he has edited a book on AAC for adults with aphasia. He is also a co-editor of Evidence Based Communication Assessment and Intervention Journal. He is a recipient of the Mary E Switzer Distinguished Rehabilitation Research Fellowship from the United States Department of Education’s National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research. In 2005, he was named a Fellow of the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association (ASHA). The status of Fellow is one of the highest honours ASHA can bestow. As a Fulbright Scholar, he lectured at Hallym University in South Korea in 2013. His research investigated the efficacy of AAC intervention in persons with chronic severe aphasia and the variables that influence the outcomes of such intervention. His second line of research focussed on understanding factors that influence symbol learning in persons with developmental disabilities.
 
Attendees of the workshop will obtain knowledge on the latest developments in AAC technology and clinical practice in acquired neurogenic disorders.
