The Student Chapter of SIAM at the University of Pretoria

SIAM at the University of Pretoria

Welcome to the Student Chapter of SIAM at the University of Pretoria.
Since its inception in 2014 as the first student chapter of SIAM in South Africa, SIAM@UP has been
instrumental in the creation of an incubation space for young mathematicians and engineers interested in applied and computational mathematics. From the landmark Undergraduate Seminar Series to the yearly Pi Day festivities, SIAM@UP not only connects graduate and undergraduate students alike, but also fosters learning and the exploration of the mathematical sciences. SIAM@UP intends to:

a) Raise awareness of the crucial importance of mathematical sciences in a South African
context.

b) Provide students with the opportunity to connect with one another to share ideas and
viewpoints.

c) Provide students with a space to hone their skills, not only as young scientists, but as members of
academic society.

Student members of SIAM@UP enjoy several benefits, including the following:

  •  Free student membership in SIAM.
  • Participation in chapter activities and SIAM annual meetings.
SIAM@UP is currently administered by Dr Mihaja Ramanantoanina and the executive committee, consisting of
  • Ben Victor: Chairperson
  • Gerlo Theron: Communications Officer
  • Marco Botha: Treasurer
  • Richard Pretorius: Secretary.
To join, please follow this link, choose “Student” and then “Free Undergraduate Membership”. Note
that SIAM assumes 4-year undergraduate programmes, so an Honours degree is still considered to be part of an undergraduate degree.
At some point, a student chapter will need to be indicated. The name of our chapter is listed as
“University of Pretoria”. When asked for a membership starting date, please choose January 2025 (the start of our academic year).
