Holds

The University of Pretoria may place an academic hold on students’ ability to register for various reasons, such as an outstanding tuition fee payment, documentation missing from the registration process, such as an ID document or matric certificate.

If you see any of these notifications on your profile in the UP Student Portal, this means the university has placed an academic hold on your student profile and you will not be registered as a student until the issue is resolved.

Hold type	Hold description	Information
Finance	Financially unsuitable (SC5) Registration unsuitable (RE1)	The SC5 hold indicates that a student has an outstanding balance on their student account that needs to be settled prior to doing the online registration. Click here to find out more.
Finance	Financially unsuitable (SC5) Registration unsuitable (RE1)	The RE1 hold indicates that a student has not paid the initial registration fee/deposit.Click here to find out more.
Laptop	Laptop Application	Please note the laptop application hold will not prevent you from registering.
Documents	Contract outstanding (SS3)	The SS3 hold indicates that a student’s contract has not yet been completed or has not yet been submitted without supporting documents or the documents submitted are invalid.
	Identity document outstanding (SS4)	The SS4 hold indicates that a students passport/national ID is outstanding. The student will be required to scan and upload a .PDF copy of their passport/national ID. Click here to find out more.
	Matric certificate outstanding (SS5)	As a returning student (second year/postgraduate) you are required to submit a grade 12 certificate to the university. Students with this hold are required to scan and upload a .PDF copy of their grade 12 certificate. Click here to find out more.
	Cambridge certificate and results (SSC)	As a first-year student you are required to submit your results to Universities South Africa (formerly HESA) and obtain your certificate. Students will be required to scan and upload .PDF copies of their certificate and results.
Student relations	International students (SS2)	Please be advised to visit the International Cooperation Division website for a detailed directive on how to resolve issues regarding the SS2 hold.
	Expelled at the Univerisity of Pretoria	If you have this hold, please contact your faculty administrator.
	Expelled from other institutions
	Excluded from a faculty/university	Log onto UP Student Centre, click on the Exclusions link and apply online for readmission.
	Library material (SS1)	The SS1 hold indicates that the student has library material and/or fines outstanding. Students must log in to the library portal to check what actions is needed.
