Posted on March 31, 2023

Dr. Brenda van Wyk, a contract senior lecturer in the Department of Information Science, presented at the 43rd International Association of University Libraries (IATUL) conference on 14 March 2023. The conference was hosted by Zayed University and the American University of Sharjah.

The theme of the conference was Libraries Pushing Boundaries. The conference offered attendees the opportunity to reconnect, re-engage, share ideas with and learn from colleagues and friends from around the world.

Dr. van Wyk’s presented a paper titled Capitalising on the power of digital storytelling in video tutorials in academic library services. The presentation shared how storytelling, in an African context, has a rich oral and cultural history as a way to convey a message and these messages share information, feelings, attitudes, and morals of lived experiences and environment. This rich tradition has transcended into the connected world where the use of a range of ICTs combines the art of telling stories with a mixture of digital media, including text, pictures, recorded audio narration, music, and video. Designing and utilizing microcontent correctly in micro learning is an ideal information dissemination and educational tool.

IATUL was formed in 1954, as a subsection of IFLA (International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions), to provide a forum for researchers and mangers to share information, research and expertise on technical developments in both public and private academic libraries and information services.
