EBIT Faculty House 2020: EBIT Faculty Lecturer of the Year Award

Ms Samantha Miller: Profile

I worked in the publishing industry for 10, 5 years at various publishing houses before I joined the University of Pretoria to pursue my postgraduate studies and a career in teaching. My publishing career required me to regularly speak at book-related events, and communicate with several audiences, so the transition to teaching students was not hard. I find students intriguing and I value being part of their learning journey.

I always strive to balance theoretical and practical elements in my teaching equally.  I believe students need to develop their knowledgebase, while at the same time learn skills to apply within ‘real-life’ simulated scenarios. I frequently use case studies, invite guest speakers from industry, give group work and include peer assessment. I thus follow a student-centred teaching approach.

During lockdown I created a YouTube channel that included lectures, playlists (based on themes) and competitions to engage with students better.

Quote by Professor Beth le Roux

“Samantha won a lecturer of the year award from the EBIT House Committee. It was students who voted for her. They voted for her because of her caring attitude and support during a difficult year of online teaching. This is such a lovely thing to say about your lecturer!”
