Posted on November 20, 2023

On 7th of November 2023, Prof John Ouma Mugabe of the Graduate School of Technology Management (GSTM) addressed African Rectors, Vice Chancellors and Presidents of African Universities on effective governance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Africa. Presenting a keynote address at the “High Level AI Forum for African Vice Chancellors”, Prof. Mugabe outlined key principles of human autonomy, trustworthiness, risk assessment and management, public participation, transparency and accountability that must be embedded in national, regional and international policy frameworks for governing AI. He challenged African universities to provide intellectual leadership and technical support to African countries’ efforts to develop policy and regulatory frameworks for responsible AI. “If African universities do not engage, Africa will miss the AI revolution”, Prof Mugabe stressed.

More than 200 senior African university leaders attended the forum and resolved to establish an active network of African researchers in transdisciplinary work on AI to ensure that the continent maximizes benefits and reduces any risks of the technology. GSTM looks forward to being a key source of new knowledge and information to support Africa to develop workable regulations for AI.
