August in Women's Month in South Africa and celebrates the sacrifices women have made to our society. One of our graduates was recently featured by the Presidency of South Africa. Dr Mary-Jane Bopape, the current Chief Scientist at the South African Weather Service who leads a group of scientists responsible for radar, satellite and lightning detection network data, is developing South Africa's first weather and climate change modelling system. Dr Bopape graduated from the university in 2013 with her thesis titled Simulations of moist convection using the quasi-elastic equations. She was supervised by Professor Willem Landman. For more on Dr Bopape's recent work have a look here or here.
