GeoTerra Image inspires UP students on data and diverse skills

Posted on May 27, 2025

Third-year students enrolled in the University of Pretoria's GIS 310 geospatial course recently had the invaluable opportunity to engage with industry leaders from GeoTerra Image (GTI) during a compelling guest lecture. The session, delivered by GTI's Ross and Jasper, provided profound insights into the evolving landscape of the geospatial industry, emphasizing the critical role of data and the necessity of a multi-faceted skill set for future professionals.

The core of the lecture underscored the paramount importance of data as the bedrock of all meaningful geospatial products. Ross and Jasper articulated how raw data, when expertly processed and analyzed, transforms into actionable intelligence that drives decision-making across various sectors. They highlighted that in today's rapidly advancing technological environment, a deep understanding of data principles is non-negotiable for any aspiring geospatial scientist.

Beyond data, the presenters passionately advocated for the integration of diverse skills and methodologies. They illustrated how leveraging cutting-edge tools and techniques, ranging from artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) for advanced analytics and automation, must be seamlessly combined with a strong, foundational knowledge of geospatial science. This holistic approach, they argued, is essential for creating innovative and truly impactful geospatial solutions that address complex real-world challenges. A point of particular pride for the Department of Geography, Geoinformatics and Meteorology was the presence of Jasper, an alumnus of the BScHons Geoinformatics programme, whose journey from student to industry expert served as a powerful inspiration.

The lecture concluded with an engaging question-and-a-session, where students eagerly posed questions to Ross and Jasper. The discussion spanned a wide array of topics, from specific technical aspects of the presentation content to broader inquiries about the current state and future trends of the geospatial industry. Students also seized the chance to gain practical advice on navigating the job market and securing entry-level positions within this dynamic field.

The Department of Geography, Geoinformatics and Meteorology, along with its enthusiastic students, extends its sincere gratitude to GeoTerra Image, Ross, and Jasper for generously dedicating their time and sharing their invaluable expertise. Such industry interactions are crucial in bridging the gap between academia and professional practice, equipping students with the insights and motivation needed to excel in their future careers.
