The Faculty of Law (UP Law) at the University of Pretoria (UP) is proud to announce that alumnus Mr Tevaughnay van Wyk has been appointed as the State Advocate for Sexual Offences in the De Aar region in the Northern Cape.

Van Wyk obtained his LLB and LLM (Human rights) degrees at UP, and in 2012 became the first legal research intern to the former Public Protector, Adv Thuli Madonsela.

In 2013 Van Wyk joined the National Prosecuting Authority’s Aspirant Prosecutor Programme and successfully completed it the following year.  Consequently, he was appointed as District Court Prosecutor in Galeshewe, Northern Cape.  Within five years of service, Van Wyk was promoted to Regional Court Prosecutor and commenced duties in the Sexual Offences Court in January 2020.

In response to his appointment, a proud Van Wyk states that ‘I have a passion for working with child survivors and ensuring that victims of sexual abuse are afforded the opportunity to come forward and share their truth about sexual abuse and that justice is meted out based on the values of human dignity and equality.’

In his first year of his undergraduate studies Van Wyk was chosen to participate in the Kovsie First Year Moot Court Competition.  He was consequently appointed as a member of the Executive Committee of the UP Law Moot Society for the duration of his undergraduate studies.  His duties inter alia included selecting and training law students to compete both domestically and internationally.

In 2011 Van Wyk was appointed as a Judge of the UP Constitutional Tribunal, responsible for hearing matters concerning disciplinary transgressions committed by students at the university.   He continued to serve on the Independent Electoral Committee which oversaw elections of the Student Representative Council.

Dean Professor Elsabe Schoeman and UP Law wish him the very best with this new chapter in his career.
