EMS shines in latest THE Subject Rankings

The Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) at the University of Pretoria has once again demonstrated its commitment to academic excellence in the latest 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) Subject Rankings, which were released on 22 January 2025.

These rankings cover 11 broad subject areas offered across UP’s faculties, including those offered in the Faculty of EMS. The subject rankings assess the University’s performance in these broad areas globally according to a wide criteria, which includes teaching, research quality, international positioning, and industry engagement, amongst others.

These rankings play an important role in attracting top talent, funding, and meaningful collaborations with other institutions across the globe. 

EMS was ranked number one in South Africa in the Accounting and Finance subject areas, and second in the Economics and Econometrics subject areas. The Faculty was ranked fourth in the Business and Management subject areas.

Prof Margaret Chitiga-Mabugu, Dean of the Faculty of EMS, stated that these rankings reflect the Faculty’s excellence and commitment to global standards of quality education, research, and engagement.

She expressed delight over the Faculty’s performance, noting that the rankings reflect the quality of teaching and learning, and research in the Faculty.

“These global rankings reaffirm our commitment to quality education, research, and engagement. We are exceptionally proud of our performance in the latest THE Subject Rankings. The rankings have positioned us as a leader in commerce education and this achievement aligns well with our prestigious AACSB accreditation, which was awarded to the Faculty in 2023 for meeting the highest standard of commerce education globally.”

“Our achievements and stellar performance in these rankings, would not be possible without the unwavering commitment of our staff, who continuously strive for excellence and innovation in their academic activities, along with the support of the University of Pretoria,” she added.
