Q: Briefly summarise your studies (including the qualifications you obtained) and your professional career, with special mention of specific highlights/milestones.
A: I completed my studies at the University of Pretoria (UP), acquiring a PhD in Business Management and a Master’s in Development Practice. Additionally, I attained my Bachelor of Arts (BA) and BA (Hons) degrees from the University of the Western Cape.
My PhD dissertation is titled “Enabling Leadership and Innovation in South African Mining Companies: Pursuing ESG Principles and the 2030 Social Development Goals”. Throughout my academic journey, I have maintained a strong interest in development, business management and leadership, which has significantly contributed to my professional career.
Balancing my studies with multiple jobs to support myself, my family and my education, I have always pursued academics part-time.
Q: To what extent did your studies at UP benefit you in your career and contribute to your success?
A: My time at UP has been highly beneficial to my career. The rigorous academic curriculum, from my master’s to my PhD, along with the knowledgeable and supportive faculty, has nurtured critical thinking and problem-solving skills that I use daily in my professional life. Additionally, the university's extensive network and connections have provided opportunities for research interviews and professional development. Overall, my academic journey at UP has been instrumental in shaping my professional path and goals.
Q: Why did you choose your particular degree course/major(s) and did it meet your expectations…or, in hindsight, should you have opted for something else?
A: I chose to pursue my PhD in Business Management with a focus on leadership, innovation and ESG because I was deeply interested in understanding how leadership can significantly impact the transformation and navigation of complex issues within the South African mining sector. Businesses worldwide are facing the challenge of complying with ESG principles and transforming their operations. This area of work aligns with my interests and offers promising career opportunities as a scholar and consultant specialising in ESG and leadership in the private sector. I am pleased with my choice, and with the exceptional support from my supervisor, my expectations have been fully met.
Q: As a UP and EMS alumna, what makes you proud to be associated with the UP?
A: As a UP and EMS graduate, I am proud to be associated with UP for several reasons. The rigorous academic curriculum, supportive academic staff, encouraging learning environment, academic excellence and global network are all features that make me proud to be part of UP and the EMS faculty. EMS alumnus fills me with pride due to the university's excellence, values, and the lasting impact it has had on my life and career.
Q: Given your academic experience at UP, what advice can you pass on to current students?
A: My advice is to use your time wisely and be disciplined in setting aside time for reading, researching and writing. Look for opportunities to connect with potential mentors in your field and stay focused on your goals, no matter how tough it gets. Stay positive and committed to completing your studies successfully and you will achieve it. Finally, balance your studies with good sleep and exercise to maintain your mental and physical health.
Q: Artificial Intellegence (ChatGPT-4/Generative AI/LLM) is expected to have a significant impact on both tertiary education and the workplace. What is your take on the advantages/disadvantages of AI for students and employees/employers?
A: AI tools clearly have the potential to revolutionise higher education and the workplace by enhancing understanding and streamlining administrative tasks. However, it is important not to become overly reliant on AI. Critical thinking, research, comprehension and problem-solving skills remain essential for distinguishing yourself.
Q: Going forward, what are your professional/business/personal goals? What is your ultimate ‘dream job’?
A: My goal is to join a business school where I can share my experience and expertise while staying curious, conducting research and applying my knowledge in practice by running a successful consulting firm.
Q: Which business/trade-related publications (magazines/newspapers/blogs, etc) do you enjoy reading?
A: I enjoy reading the Harvard Business Review, ESG Today and The Economist.
Q: What inspires and motivates you personally?
A: I am driven by my passion to transcend my circumstances and make a daily impact. Coming from very humble beginnings, I believe that with hard work, focus and a growth mindset, you can change your story and create your own success.
Q: What is your ‘compass’ in life that keeps you ‘on track’?
A: God is my guiding compass, and my spiritual life has always been a significant part of my journey. My belief that God has my best interests at heart has carried me through the lowest times in my life. My favourite Bible verse, which always brings me comfort, is Jeremiah 29:11: "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
Q: If you could have a face-to-face meeting with an inspiring person - in any domain - who sets an example in transforming the world and inspiring others to do the same, who would it be and what would you like to discuss?
A: I am eager to meet Fawn Weaver, CEO of Uncle Nearest, best-selling author and founder of the Nearest Green Foundation. With the company currently valued at around $900 million, I am eager to explore and discuss her journey in rapidly building the business, her outstanding storytelling skills and her commitment to education.
Q: Tell more about yourself, including your likes/dislikes; strengths/weaknesses, business/life philosophy.
A: I enjoy reading and listening to inspiring books about individuals who have achieved remarkable success, particularly in business, politics, sports and the arts.
One of my weaknesses is impatience, often desiring rapid progress. Over time, I have learned to embrace and trust the process more. Yet, I also view this hunger for progress as a strength, driving me to set new goals and maintain high standards for myself.
In business, my philosophy is centred on always striving to honour my commitments.
Q: If you could make a contribution to solving one/some of these problems, what would you like to tackle and why?
A: I am passionate about addressing division by fostering greater trust and building bridges among people. Leadership plays a crucial role in promoting a sense of humanity, understanding and collaboration. If we focus more on finding ways to work together, we can achieve so much more.
Q: What are your hopes and aspirations for South Africa and its people?
A: My aspiration for the country is that every child has the opportunity to receive a high-quality education, every adult has access to decent jobs and healthcare and every citizen lives in safe and secure housing. I hope that we can come together as a nation to build a prosperous future that benefits all our people, not just a privileged few.
