EMS Extraordinary professor profiles

 

The Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) boasts several highly acclaimed extraordinary professors from across the globe, including South Africa. They are renowned in their respective fields and make an invaluable contribution to broadening the knowledge base at EMS.
 
In a new Q&A series, EMS places the spotlight on these exemplary academics who, among other things, share their thoughts on various topical issues about tertiary education going forward. Along with weekly profiles of esteemed alumni and other prominent stakeholders, this separate series forms part of our continuous centenary celebrations. 
 
 
Prof Lisa Marriott
 
Prof Lisa Marriott, Professor of Taxation at the School of Accounting and Commercial Law at the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand commenced her three-year term as extraordinary professor at the University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) on 1 August 2019. Teaching taxation at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, her research interests include social justice and inequality. She has a particular interest in the behavioural impact of taxation. Currently supervising the PhD of an EMS faculty member, Prof Marriott considers herself very lucky to be part of the Department of Taxation at UP. Prof Chris Evans
 
The over-arching goal that permeates the research of Professor Chris Evans, an extraordinary professor in the Department of Taxation, is to explore, create and develop more citizen-centric approaches to the way in which the tax system of any country impacts upon its populations. Throughout his academic career in Australia and South Africa he has sought to discover new and better ways in which the interactions between the citizen (individual and corporate) and the state can be designed, implemented and moderated to ensure appropriate tax capacity is developed without unnecessary burdens being imposed on those who fund that capacity. Prof Manoel Bittencourt
 
Holding a PhD in Economics from Bristol University, among many other academic qualifications, Prof Manoel Bittencourt served as lecturer in Economics at the University of Cape Town (2007 – 2009), senior lecturer in Economics (2009 – 2012) and associate professor of Economics at UP (2013 – 2018), professor of Economics at the University of the Witwatersrand (2018 – 2020). Outside academia, he is a keen runner and swimmer and particularly interested in all matters football.

Prof Tim Rupert
 
Currently Professor in the Accounting Group of the D’Amore-McKim School of Business at Northeastern University in the USA, Prof Tim Rupert also finds his work as extraordinary professor in the Department of Accounting at the University of Pretoria (UP) most rewarding. “Helping a student develop the skills to identify a research topic and design a study that will provide evidence to address the research question, is quite rewarding because these studies contribute to our knowledge base,” he stresses. A recipient of the Outstanding Educator Award from the Massachusetts Society of CPAs, the University’s Excellence in Teaching Award and the D’Amore-McKim School of Business’s Best Teacher of the Year award multiple times, Prof Rupert is clearly held in high regard as a teacher and mentor. Prof Stephen Hall
 
Throughout his academic career stretching over four decades, Prof Stephen Hall, head of Department of Economics at Leicester University in the UK and Extraordinary Professor at the University of Pretoria (UP), has made a massive contribution as a lecturer, researcher, external examiner, consultant (academic and commercial), committee, editorial and advisory board member and writer to mention but a few. Besides wide-ranging career and business roles in the UK, he also staked his claim internationally, including South Africa, where, for many years, he has been heavily involved in the development of econometrics in Pretoria and the country more widely. It therefore comes as no surprise that in 2010 UP awarded him an Honorary Doctorate (DCom). Prof Adré Schreuder
 
For over thirty years, Prof Adré Schreuder’s career has been closely entwined with the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) at UP. From 1988, when he accepted a position as lecturer at EMS, rising in the 1990s to Head of the Department, then as founder of the Faculty’s partnership research company, Consulta Research, and since 1999 as Extraordinary Professor, he has made an invaluable contribution to the Faculty’s knowledge base.
