Posted on September 10, 2012

The Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering at the University of Pretoria (UP) launched the CBI-electric low voltage Chair in Power Electronics. The chair, funded by CBI-electric: low voltage, will initially support salary, undergraduate and postgraduate bursaries and research project costs in the Department for the next three years. Additionally, CBI-electric low voltage has also sponsored power electronics and electrical equipment to the value of R 140 000, which students will use for their design project work.

CBI-electric low voltage (previously known as Circuit Breaker Industries) is a member of the Reunert Group, which is based in Johannesburg, South Africa. CBI-electric low voltage is a supplier of quality low-voltage electrical distribution, protection and control equipment and is a proudly South African company.

Mr Chris Oliver, Managing Director, indicated that when he and his delegation visited the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering earlier in the year it was obvious to him and his group that this was the department of choice where the firm should invest in the development and training of high-level skills in the area of electrical engineering.

Mr Oliver further mentioned that the South African electrical manufacturing industry has always been a frontrunner in the area of technology and design. "In order to stay abreast of change, CBI-electric low voltage has to continue to look forward, meeting the demands of the global market. For CBI-electric low voltage to continue being a global player and exporter we need highly skilled and innovative engineers who can develop novel products and undertake leading research." said Mr Oliver.

It is envisaged that CBI-electric’s partnership with UP will lead to further research and product development, as well as development of skilled human capacity, thereby contributing to realisation of the vision elaborated in the National Development Plan 2030.
