Director's welcome message 2023
Ms Lindiwe Soyizwapi: Director Department of Library Services

Welcome back to the Department of Library Services (DLS) at the beginning of 2023.

Dear members of the UP community

It is my great pleasure to welcome you all on behalf of the Department of Library Services.

It is so good to see students and staff walking across our campuses. The atmosphere of seeing students rushing to classes, and coming to the library to study, work together, and meet friends is a fulfilling experience.

Our libraries are the place where our community learns and works together in physical and virtual spaces. We are also grateful for raising your voices to tell us about your needs during the survey conducted in the second semester last year. We are working on the solutions and improvements you requested. We also have many resources to help you get your work done.

We invite our students to:

  • Make it a regular habit to study and work in our various libraries. The libraries have spaces where you can study, research, create and relax. This should also be the space for collaborative work with other students. We trust this will be one of those places enabling you to get things done.
  • Discover academic content and information resources (journals, databases, books, videos, films, documentaries) offered by the library that you will find useful for learning and class projects.
  • Know that information specialists and all staff members are here to support you in your academic journey. Information specialists are available to assist you in using information effectively and responsibly for academic success.

We invite academic and professional staff to:

  • Work with an information specialist to embed information literacy learning into your courses on ClickUP.
  • Use our academic content and collections for your teaching, research, and personal development.
  • Work with the library to enhance the information and digital skills of students.

The library is always interested to hear from our students and staff on what you need to get the work done. Please post your suggestions using this link

We offer a number of workshops and instructional videos, including information literacy, academic integrity, research, and digital skills. Our library guides steer you to important resources for all your subject areas.

You are also encouraged to use any of these platforms for the latest information about the libraries, workshops, services, and events as well as interact & communicating with us:

All of us at the Department of Library Services look forward to seeing and working with you this year.
