Social Media Insights September - December 2022

Posted on January 23, 2023

The Department of Library Services ended the year off strong with several fun and exciting initiatives for our students! Our library’s social media channels have continued to strengthen the connection with our engaged users. In September, the library hosted a Storytelling Workshop, in collaboration with Righardt le Roux from Nal'ibali and Ntsako Tshungu from the National Reading Collaboration Trust.

To start September with a ‘Spring’ in our step, our social media team put together and shared a Spring-inspired #InstaNovel called, “The Spring of the Year.” The team also shared two other #InstaNovels through the months of October and November, namely, “Halloween at Merryvale,” and, “For the sake of School.”

Our social media team shared 5 #UPisLit videos over the past four months including novels such as, “Where the Crawdads Sing,” and, “Wild Imperfections,” which were enjoyed by our engaged audience. The library also ran a social media giveaway to celebrate Self-Care September, namely, #UPLibrarySelfCare. We chose several winners, some of which won cash vouchers up to the value of R400 to use at Salon de Beauté in Pretoria.

We’ve continued sharing weekly posts that have proven to be popular, such as our #MondayMotivation reels, #eResources, and #ResearchTipOfTheWeek. The library hosted a Mind-Altering Books Seminar that welcomed several key speakers to the Merensky 2 library to talk about some of their favourite pieces of literature.

In the month of October, we welcomed Top Dogs back to our Hatfield and Prinshof campuses to allow our students to find comfort and companionship in therapy dogs prior to a stressful exam season. The library social media team coordinated and shared this event through our social media channels, and the turnout from our students was incredible. We hosted one session at Prinshof, and two sessions at Hatfield, with one of our reels reaching over 15 000 people! This is an initiative that we hope to continue in the years ahead.

At the start of November, we celebrated the launch of the Groenkloof library’s new 24/7 study centre. We believe that this facility will prove to be very useful to the students on Groenkloof campus.

To finish the year off strong, the library social media team decorated a custom-built Christmas Tree in the Merensky 2 library. The structure was filled with books and decorations, as well as scannable QR codes to see more holiday season-themed eBooks. Throughout the month of December, holiday season posts were shared. This included eBook recommendations and images of each of the library’s faculty teams.

2022 was a year that held great success and many challenges. The Department of Library Services is excited to tackle 2023 with a positive mindset, and the Marketing and Quality Assurance office is ready to showcase it all to you. Thank you for being a part of our cherished community.
