24-Hour Study Centre launched at the Education Library, Groenkloof campus

Posted on November 08, 2022

On Monday, 7 November 2022, the Dean of the Faculty of Education, Prof Chika Sehoole, officially handed over the new Education Library 24-Hour Study Centre to the Department of Library Services (DLS). This new facility is located to the right of the library entrance on the Groenkloof campus and will be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The DLS places a high priority on teaching and learning support and this new facility will improve the student experience of undergraduate students by providing a secure, peaceful, and welcoming location for study.

The Dean, Prof Chika Sehoole opened the session by welcoming the guests and thanking them for braving the rainy weather. “The idea of a 24/7 study centre is great, the more students utilise this space, the higher we can expect them to FLY@UP”. He also encouraged students to not take this facility for granted and that they should use this space to excel in their studies. He continued with excitement to say "I love libraries, there is nothing like walking into the building and instantly feeling like you are home. It puts you in a state of mind where you want to start and finish your assignments - especially in a facility such as this one!" He concluded by thanking the facilities team, and various stakeholders who contributed to this project.

Thabang Phiri, Chairperson of House Education, thanked the Dean and the Facilities team for the opportunity of a safe space and emphasised the positive impact it will have on students who usually have to travel far to the Hatfield campus at night.

On behalf of the DLS, Modisa Khosie, Deputy Director: Information Resources, Access, and Operations, received the centre. He expressed that “as the DLS, we always want to enhance our user experience and we hope that students will embrace this facility as it’s very important and will be an escape from distractions. I will come here sometimes to get a quiet corner to reflect undisturbed.”

The DLS is very proud of this collaboration with the Faculty of Education and wishes all students a great and productive study journey in this facility.
