Q: Must I have around-the-clock access to the internet?

Continuous, around-the-clock access is unnecessary; however, regular weekly access is essential to stay up-to-date with study materials and requirements.

 


Q: What device do I need to study online?

You will need a laptop or a desktop computer that can connect to the internet. Mobile phones and tablets can be used to access the required platforms to view content, but a device with a larger screen and keyboard will be required for completing assessments.


Q: What are the advantages of studying online?

You can study at times that work best for you, such as evenings or weekends. Please remember weekly engagements are required. There is no need to travel to lectures, exam venues, or pre-determined facilities because you submit all your learning activities and assignments online. This will help you balance work, family, and other responsibilities.

 


Q: What are the start dates for UPOnline programmes?

UPOnline offers multiple start dates throughout the year, depending on the specific programme. Some programmes follow a 6-intake schedule, while others have a 5-intake schedule. Q: Are UPOnline programmes fully online?

Yes, all UPOnline programmes are fully online. Students will need computer literacy and a stable internet connection to participate fully.


You won’t ever need to travel to any of the physical campuses of the University of Pretoria to attend class. All your study materials will be available through the learning management system (Blackboard/clickUP).

Q: Why do I have an SS2/Immigration requirements ICD hold/block on my student account?

The system automatically places the SS2 / ICD service indicator on the international student account at the beginning of every year.

We need a copy of your passport and visa/permit if you study from within SA.

If you are studying from outside South Africa, we require a copy of your passport or Identity document and a confirmation letter stating that you are studying from your home country.

Please upload your documents to your student centre, click the Documents and Communications tile under the relates to drop-down menu, select international students, and choose the relevant year and document type using the other drop-down menus.

This information is required by the Department of Home Affairs annually, so as soon as we receive the required information, UP will be able to assist with removing the SS2/ICD block that prevents you from registering for your module.

Q: Why should I have access to schools, sports clubs, or accredited training facilities for the Higher Certificate in Sports Sciences?

It is recommended that you dedicate approximately 21 hours per week to your studies, as there are weekly engagements and commitments in each module.

You will require part-time access to schools, sports clubs, and/or accredited training facilities to complete the Sports Practical module (JRC 180), which will run concurrently with your first six theoretical modules. While the module includes online components and the creation of a portfolio of evidence, it also involves placement participation requirements. You will be expected to participate in coaching education and training, sports administration, and first aid practical training.

 


Q: How much is the first payment for the Higher Certificate in Sports Sciences?

Tuition fees are structured into equal payments per module, payable upon module registration before the start date. You will pay for two modules when starting the programme (the first theoretical module and the practical module), and thereafter, you will only pay for one module at a time until the completion of the programme.

Upon starting the programme, you will register for one of the following modules: JLO 180 or JLZ 180, depending on your start date, and the Sports Practical module, JRC 180. The JRC 180 Sports Practical module runs concurrently with the first six modules of the programme and will only need to be registered once at the start of your studies. Afterward, you will register for one module at a time until the end of the programme.

Q: How do I change or correct my name and surname?

To change or correct your name and surname, please email [email protected] with the necessary supporting documents. Note that updates to your gender, name, or surname will only be processed if you attach a valid ID or passport and a confirmation letter from the Department of Home Affairs. A marriage certificate or divorce decree is invalid for updating a surname. The names and surnames as they appear on your valid ID or passport will be printed on your qualification certificate.

Q: How do I change my UP-student portal password?

First, try the Lost (forgotten) password option on your login page. If it doesn't work, please email the UPOnline Administrative office at [email protected] to reset a forgotten password.

The UPOnline Administrative office will contact you to do a security check and then issue you with a temporary password. To create a new password, you must then use the "Change password" link on the UP-Student Portal link.

Q: How do I generate a quotation?

Log in to the Student Centre (self-service) to generate a quotation. Click on the Student Financials tile, then select Fee Estimator from the left menu to create a quotation. The system will allow you to enter the term and academic programme (plan) for your studies. You must complete the course selection by entering the module codes (Example of a course selection option: Subject Area: PHM, Catalog Number: 710)).

Use the plus (+) button to add modules or the minus (–) button to remove modules. Click the 'Generate Quote' button to view, save, or print your quotation.

 


Q: How much is the UPOnline annual increase?

Module pricing is subject to change at the beginning of each year without prior notice. UPOnline tuition fees will increase annually by approximately 5%. The annual increase will apply from the March intake, which is the second intake of the year. If the programme fee is paid in full upfront the student is still liable for the difference between the upfront payment and increased amount until the completion of the programme.

Q: What do I do if my fees are paid by my bursar/sponsor?

Ensure that you are aware of the conditions and value of your bursary, as bursaries may or may not cover the full costs of your study. Students must submit written proof from the sponsor of the bursary awarded to them prior to registering for the first module. Otherwise, the student will have to pay the tuition fee, and regular payment deadlines will apply.

After securing your own external bursary from your company or institution, you must bring this to our attention. The proof of bursary must be on an official letterhead addressed to the University of Pretoria or the Registrar and signed by the bursar/sponsor. It must confirm the student number, total amount of funding, and year of study for the bursary granted to you.

The final decision regarding the acceptability of a bursary letter rests with the university; if the letter is not marked as valid, the regular payment deadlines will apply. Students remain responsible for their student accounts if their bursary sponsor does not pay their account.

Please upload a new bursary letter addressed to UP for every academic year before registering for any modules to emphasise the bursary is for that specific academic year.

External companies or other institutions that sponsor students with bursaries must make payments once for every three intakes; otherwise, students will not be allowed to register for subsequent modules unless they pay the tuition before or on the module start date.

 


Q: Do I require an invoice for my bursar or sponsor?

Please note the following process for UPOnline students whose sponsors or bursars will pay their tuition fees. A tax invoice will be required for the sponsor/bursar. Only the sponsor or bursar can request an invoice by emailing [email protected] . The University will not issue invoices for requests made by the student. Alternatively, the sponsor or bursar can send a Purchase Order to the University, in which case the information requested below needs to be revised. Please do not create a document from this table; the information should be included in the email.
