Enrol for Fully Online Programmes at UP

UPOnline offers a future-focussed approach to learning, with a growing number of part-time, fully online programmes, to make quality education accessible to a wider student audience. Completing your accredited qualification from a top university, means you don’t need to travel to classes or pay for extra accommodation. Online studies provide you with the freedom to continue your education and your normal employment. The online modules allow you to study anytime, anywhere, and on any device with the support and motivation of call centre staff and online facilitators. A further benefit of enrolling for a UPOnline programme is that you only pay for the module or modules you are studying.

Quality Education

The University of Pretoria’s fully online mode of teaching offers a flexible and innovative approach to higher education. Unlike the traditional setting where students register for several modules at once, UPOnline allows you to enrol in one module at a time, with multiple intakes each year. Each module runs for 8 weeks or multiples of eight, and you only pay for the module you are currently studying. Occasionally, students may need to register and pay for two modules at the same time. You will be assessed continuously throughout the module, accumulating grades as you progress. Upon successful completion of each module, you can then register and pay for the next one.

The quality and recognition of UPOnline qualifications are identical to those of the University's traditional face-to-face programmes. As all of UP’s academic programmes are accredited by the Council for Higher Education (CHE), the same rigorous standards apply to the online programmes. The key benefit of this fully online study option is the flexibility it provides – you can study from anywhere without needing to attend campus, and participate in a variety of assessment activities such as projects, assignments, quizzes, discussion forums, and journals.

What is Unique About UPOnline Offerings?

  • UPOnline programmes are fully online, with no physical face-to-face sessions, though virtual face-to-face interactions with lecturers and peers may occur.
  • All learning activities, assessments, support services, and interactions are integrated online, accessible from any device with a stable internet connection.
  • Most programmes are offered part-time, with multiple intakes throughout the year, allowing flexibility in starting your studies.
  • You typically enrol in one module at a time, with modules running for 8 weeks or multiples of eight. Occasionally, you may need to register and pay for more than one module at once.
  • Modules are structured with 7 weeks of learning followed by 1 week of recess between modules, and there is an additional recess at the end of the year.
  • Tuition fees are divided into equal payments per module, payable upon registration and before the module begins. You can choose to pay per module or in full upfront.
  • Coursework is semi-synchronous, meaning you can complete most tasks at your own pace, but with fixed deadlines for assignments and weekly content releases. Real-time virtual sessions may also be scheduled when necessary.
  • Dedicated online facilitators and a support team are available to assist you throughout your studies, providing guidance and answering any queries.
  • The programmes offer a highly engaging and interactive learning experience with features like interactive videos, discussion forums, quizzes, and other dynamic activities to enhance your learning.

Computer Literacy

The University of Pretoria utilises Blackboard, branded as clickUP, as its online learning management system. ClickUP serves as your virtual classroom, providing access to all your study materials, as well as offering simple, convenient, and reliable web conferencing and virtual classroom tools specifically designed for education and training.

ClickUP is accessible through a web browser on any device, such as a laptop, tablet, or smartphone. A comprehensive student guide is available to assist you in navigating the platform. Before enrolling, it is important to have some technical and digital literacy skills, including the ability to:

  • Navigate the University's eLearning environment (clickUP).
  • Use the email service within clickUP.
  • Manage digital files, such as creating, storing, uploading, and attaching files for assignment submissions using software like MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and others.
  • Conduct research using the Library or Library databases and apply proper referencing techniques.
  • Operate a webcam, upload videos or audio files, and use social media for communication or collaboration.
